Probabilistic Forecasting For Everyone

MonteCarloCSV is a tool that creates probabilistic forecasts using Monte Carlo Simulations (MCS) based on any CSV input.

It's an easy way to try out probabilistic forecasting without needing money or permission, as it's free and does not need any admin permissions to get data out of your systems.

Key Features

  • Probabilistic Forecasting made simple: Try out Monte Carlo Simulations without having to install costly extensions or the need for admin rights on your Work Tracking System

  • Privacy-Focused: Runs locally, with no connection to third-party services needed

  • Flexible: Almost all tools can export CSV files, which is the only input the tool needs

  • Cross-Platform: Based on Python, which runs on virtually any operating system

  • Free: Download and try it out at no cost

  • Open-Source: All code is hosted on GitHub for full transparency

Sample Use Cases

If you are just getting started and wonder how to use this, here are some ideas:

  • Plan: Use a "How Many" forecast to get an idea of how many items will fit in your next Iteration

  • Monitor: If you have a given number of items left, forecast "When" they will be done according to the forecast. Then keep doing this continuously to see if you are staying on track.

  • Experiment: If your team estimates (for example with Story Points), run an experiment try the simulation in parallel, and gather some data to see what is more accurate.

  • Talk: Start using the forecast to talk about the probabilities of achieving something and see if it changes the conversation.
